The beauty of form and texture of the tall building can function environmentally. The form of the tower is driven by function. The form results from the Venturi Effect. “The Venturi effect is a jet effect; as with a funnel the velocity of the fluid increases as the cross sectional area decreases, with the static pressure correspondingly decreasing.” The tower uses this physical phenomena for natural ventilation. Prevailing east wind creates negative air pressure while it penetrates the opening of the tower. This low air pressure pulls the interior air. This is the mechanism of natural ventilation.
Natural Ventilation
Natural Ventilation is one of the most important factor for designing tall building, especially at the humid subtropical climate in East Asia. Typically, 28% of energy consumption is used for cooling and ventilation. The research is focusing on the variables that can be synthesized into form shaping variables. 23% of cooling and 5% of ventilation energy of average office building can be eliminated through natural ventilation system. In Addition, more than 25% of electric energy use can be reduced by solar energy.
Tower Orientation
The optimum solar orientation of the tower is rotated 15 degree to East from the North, and for using prevailing wind, the front and back of the tower should have East-West orientation. This optimum wind orientation maximizes the wind flow through the opening of the tower. For optimizing solar orientation and wind orientation, the tower’s orientation is rotated -125 degree from the North. This orientation also provides great views of the sea and the skyline of the city from the tower.
Sun Light Penetration
The opening generates Venturi effect for natural ventilation, as well as it creates new spatial definition through large opening of the building. The diffuse and direct sun light blocked by the height of the building. However, the opening allows the light to be penetrated to the other side. The quality of the urban space will be improved.
