There was a fireman looking up toward ninth floor, his face full of hopelessness and agony. The fire raged on, but he could do nothing because he couldn’t reach the upper floors. He stared up as crying victims leaped from the windows. One hundred years later, no one ever looks up to that floor from this busy street. The Brown Building is located at the corner of a narrow street. People pass this building every day with no idea of Triangle Fire and on the ninth floor. People so busy they rarely take pause to contemplate the past.

The main idea of this memorial facade is to urge people look upward to ninth floor of the Brown Building to honor and mourn the victims of the Triangle Fire. Black Limestone surfaces are unrolled from ninth floor like drapes. The bottom of each drape is rolled up in order to add another surface at the bottom, and victims’ names are engraved on the bottom of the black limestone drape. People will look up not only at the ninth floor, but also at the names of the victims. In terms of material, the building should be conserved in its original appearance and, at the same time, a new design must be used as a visual catalyst to cause passers-by to recall the past. As a result, the new facade structure will occupy a minimal area of the existing building facade. Black Drapes will only be installed on the concrete columns of the building. The drapes will be made out of black limestone. Its module will be the same as the standard brick size of the building, which is 3’ 5/8” x 2’ 1/4” x 8’. This will enable it to harmonize with existing building facade.

Drapes will be prefabricated in 45”x48” modules. Limestone panels will be attached to the precast concrete. Prefabricated modules will be held by the existing concrete columns of the facade. To minimize damage to the existing facade, only a few bricks will be removed where the steel tubes need to connect to the concrete columns. Steel tubes work as framework to hold each module. Because of this modular system, it will be easy to install and remove from the building for maintenance or other purposes.
